Bed Guide
Practical Points
Every year you will spend 3000 hours in your bed which is over 120 days! This is why we at Available Beds want you to be as happy and as comfortable in this environment as possible.
Size
According to the Sleep Council (www.sleepcouncil.com) your bed should
be at least 10-15cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in the bed. You should be able to lie side by
side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching. Bigger is better.
Here is a size guide for UK sizes. Please note that these are the sizes for Mattresses which will also be the
rough measurements for the internal dimensions of a bedstead but not the overall measurements for actual bed itself.

Mattress Advice
Try this test to check for correct support:
While lying on your back can you slide the flat of your hand into the hollow of your back?
Type of Mattress
Covers
The outer fabric (known as ticking) is usually Tufted or Quilted.
- Quilting is, in most cases, a machine process that secures the outer fabric to the inner fillings.
- Tufting is where tapes are passed right through the mattress and secured by tags or washers.
Really good quality mattresses are hand tufted which ensures that the mattress is correctly
tufted which prolongs the life span of a mattress during wear and tear.
Tufted Mattress:
Deep Fill Tufting on more expensive mattresses:
- The sides of the mattress can also be secured with side stitching.
Springs and Support
- Open Coil (or continuous spring) is most widely used and is also better known as Bonnell Spring – these come in different wire gauges.
- Pocket Sprung which is your higher end mattress – individual springs housed in separate fabric pockets. The main advantage to pocket sprung mattresses is the ability to move independently of each other minimising overall movement on the mattress. The more springs there are in a mattress, the more support you will get.
- Foam
- High Density Foam (Polyurethane) – a synthetic, petroleum based foam. The comfort level of the mattress depends on the density and quality of the foam and the use of different layers of varying density.
- Memory Foam (Polyurethane foam) – also a synthetic, petroleum based product which relaxes under heat and pressure, taking the shape of your body.
- Latex – (Natural product made from the sap of the rubber tree) – is very durable and could benefit allergy sufferers as it has natural anti-microbial properties. It also moulds to your bodies shape under pressure.
Fillings
Quality Fillings get used across our range from Polyester, Cotton, insulation layers of fibre and in some
cases, visco – elastic memory foam.

Care of your Bed
- Do not fold your mattress.
- If your mattress is a ‘No Turn’ mattress, make sure to rotate your mattress every six month.
- To even out the wear and tear of your mattress, every 6 months make sure to flip and turn your mattress. Do not try this on your own, it is a two person job!
- If your mattress gets stained or soiled, use upholstery cleaners and follow the instructions on the container. Do not use chemicals or detergents.
- Do not soak your mattress; be sure to use a damp cloth.
- Consider getting a mattress protector.
- Vacuum your mattress using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
